You guessed it. A virtue.
After a good couple of weeks running every other day – increasing the time and distance slowly but surely – my right leg is still nagging me. It's ok when I run, but maybe that's because I'm trying so hard to maintain a 175bpm cadence (those 40 years of striding out long and far are proving very stubborn!) whilst listening to my audio book, battling 22mph winds and avoiding random piles of pebbles washed up from the beach. There are simply too many other things going on to notice a bit of fibular pain.
But when I get home, I've been finding it hard not to limp and it never quite goes away. So. Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to the physio I go who confirmed some of the tendons and soft tissue around the bone are still aggravated. This means no running for the next five days.
He also had a look at my running – which is apparently not quite right. Too much 'pushing' on the ball of my foot which is generating excess strain on the tendons, preventing them from healing. I need to practise where the weight of the foot is and getting it to 'roll' properly. So when I do start running on Sunday, I have to head back to the treadmill, focus on my foot and limit my time to 15 minutes.
For me, this is all a bit of a 'pat your head, rub your belly' sort of thing but I've been assured with practise, it WILL become second-nature. I certainly hope so because if I can smash this running mechanics thing, I'll be able to increase my mileage dramatically.
